A lot of the songs on SHALLOW were written mostly in front of a recording device, something I'm aiming to get back to this year. "Hands Of Time", one of my personal favourites, is one of them. This version is Take 2... Take 1 being the version that came out live to minidisc recorder as I sang it on-the-spot.
I had spent a weekend helping some camping friends up north to clear away fallen trees and brush from the trails of the campground, in preparation for the summer camp's opening later on in the season. After everyone had gone home, I swung my car around and drove back into the deserted campgrounds, and walked straight down to a special spot in the woods, right by the lake, that all the staff and campers know as Chapel. A peaceful, non-denominational space where you can sit on the log benches and literally listen to nature surround you. I took with me my guitar and a recording device, and just played. This is what happened.
For a neat effect, I actually stood up as the chorus repeats, and walked away, back towards camp, while the recorder rolled. You can actually hear nature start to slowly return to the scene as the threat of my guitar-playing/voice gets further and further away. Unreal. Turn it up as I start to fade out-- you'll definitely feel something special. (And don't worry, I fade it out smoothly, so no surprises!)
lyrics
Sittin' out at the chapel, feelin' the wind blow
Wonderin' where in the world all of the time goes?
It's been way too long since I saw you last time.
It's been way too long since I held your hand in mine.
Sittin' out at the chapel, feelin' the wind blow
Wonderin' where in the world all of the time goes?
It's been way too long since I saw you last time.
It's been way too long since I held your body in mine.
It's been way too long since I saw you last time.
It's been way too long since I held your hand in mine.

Sharron and I co-produced/recorded this fine album. Acoustic at hart, but with a surprisingly rockin' heart, it is an enchanting listen-- even if I do say so myself! Myke Mazzei
